Sodium Hexa meta-phosphate is a polymeric chemical compound consist of polymeric meta-phosphates. It is also known as Calgon and has the chemical formula (NaPO3)6. It is a white transparent crystal and powder and lacks color and odor. SHMP is highly water-soluble but insoluble in acetone and alcohol. SHMP is capable of giving complex soluble composition for particular metal ions like calcium and magnesium.
SHMP named Calgon has a particular preparation procedure. By heating monosodium orthophosphate at a high temperature to get Calgon. By heating, it produces sodium acid pyrophosphates which are then heated to get sodium Hexa meta-phosphate.
SHMP has a wide range of uses on the industrial level and is used sequestrate. It is used as a food additive as canned milk, cheese powders, dips, imitation cheese, breakfast cereals, whipped topping, packages egg whites. In the papermaking industry, many products need phosphates. Phosphate has to disperse properties that help to remove the cake layers of resins and pigments when they are in suspension. This dispersing property makes it applicable to the paint industry. In agricultural chemicals, it helps in plant growth and productivity; and to control pest’s growth. SHMP has a wide range in reducing the hardness of water for boiler and industrial water.
Sodium Hexa meta-phosphate is naturally non-hygroscopic and non-corrosive by nature. It is also a non-flammable compound, but excess of anything can be dangerous. SHMP sometimes causes skin and eyes irritation and swelling of the respiratory tract, but it is safe to use. It has some effects on humans, plants, and marine life due to prolonged exposure. A white powdery substance called Calgon or Graham’s salt comprises sodium and meta-phosphate. Long-term exposure to SHMP can cause kidney damage, loss of essential bone damage, pancreatic cancer, diarrhea, and dizziness.
It is used in numerous industrial applications like:-
… and many more.
