Barium sulfate is a white or yellowish odorless powder that is soluble in hot sulphuric acid. Barium sulfate is a metal sulfate and is safe to use. It is a barium salt that is a radiographic contrast agent in diagnostic x-ray procedures.

Barium Sulfate is non-combustible, does not burn itself. It is also a non-toxic compound. It can act as an oxidizing agent, but usually does not and it reacts with reducing agents such as potassium, phosphorus, or aluminum. It is prepared by treating a solution of barium salt with sodium sulfate.
