Magnesium Sulphate

WHAT IS MAGNESIUM SULPHATE

Magnesium Sulphate (MgSO4) is an inorganic salt having monoclinic molecular geometry. It has extensive applications in medical field. It has magnesium cations and sulphate anions. It commonly comes across in the form of a hydrated compound. It has a crystalline shape, a dry powder, white solid. It is metal sulphate with toxic effects. It significantly plays a role as a cardiovascular drug. It is a magnesium salt with sulphate having ionic characteristics.

Physical Properties

Its appearance is orthorhombic crystalline solid. It is colourless and odourless. It has a saline/bitter taste. It is an opaque powder. It is partially soluble in ether. Its decomposition occurs at 623°C and results in magnesium oxide. With a neutral aqueous solution, it is toxic.

  • It is used in agriculture for rising the sulfur content in the soil.
  • It is used in making beer. In this type of process, it works as brewing salt.
  • It is used in the laboratory for making other compounds.
  • It is used in the preparation of cement.
  • It is used in household products.
  • It is used in cosmetics; hair conditioning.
  • It is used in dyeing and fireproofing fabrics.
  • It is used in mineral water and tanning leather.
  • It is used in making match and explosive materials.

Preparation

Magnesium Sulphate is obtained from natural resources. It can also be produced by the reaction of sulphuric acid and magnesium carbonate.

Chemical Properties

  • It is decomposed when heated and emits toxic fumes of sulphur oxide.
  • It reacts with acids like hydrochloric acid; the result is white precipitates.
  • Its index of refraction is 1.56.
  • It reabsorbs moisture from the air.
  • It has a pH of about zero(neutral).
